. ''Memory is, in essence, romantic - it edits our experience of events as they really occurred, of journeys as they were actually lived - often leaving us with only half-glimpsed fragments, whose power is in their mystery''
From 'Collage for the Soul', Holly Harrison & Paula Grasdal
By taking the visual experiences of a journey, 'fragments' series represent an interpretation of memory. Using imagery from magazines as well as my own photography, aspects of architectural detail haunt the paper, with no human presence, allowing space for the viewer to construct their own path..
Overseas travel, social and global issues have influenced my work, as do ideas from Eastern philosophy and yoga. Inspired by diverse materials and practices as potential for self-expression, I appreciate that the idea and the material need to 'speak' with each other before a creative path is decided. Since arriving to live in Lisbon my whole world rearranged, and fragments is a reflection of this experience. In an attempt to capture the essence of this feeling, the application of collage satisfies this sense of reapplication. Fragments in various forms have been exhibited in Porto (Mostra '16 Porto), Lisbon (Mostra Lisboa '16), New York (collective exhibition at Ground Floor Gallery), Ever Lisboa Hotel and in collective exhibition 'YOU ARE HERE' at Oficina Irmaos Marques, Lisbon.
