consequential, 2017

Consequential is a series of 30 collages created from landscape photos requested by members of the public through open call, exploring abstraction of memory and fragmentation of form.
Day 1: Melukote, State of Karnataka, India
Handcut Collage | 27cm x 22cm
Photo: Fabiana Melo

"This buildings used to be the way water was collected in the past. Like a dam but with beautiful architecture."

Day 2: Two Benches
Collage | 20 x 20cm
Photo: Anton Clements

"I took this photo of two benches by a river in Oxford during the flooding in 2007. What was a good place to sit on a riverside walk had become a swamp. I can imagine bits of debris floating by or a couple stranded on the benches waiting for a boat to rescue them."

Day 3: Williamsburg Bridge
Collage | 16cm x 24cm
Photo: Dan Barlow

"I took this from the end of our nondescript street on the last night of our stay in Williamsburg on our honeymoon this summer. I was surrounded by local people who weren't there for photos, they were just sitting and relaxing with each other on the benches and stones, a breathtaking change from the pace of Manhattan (pictured) we had experienced over the last couple of days. It was quiet and the air was thick, still and warm; the rare kind of night you get back home maybe once or twice a year, usually at the end of summer.

Day 5: On a Hill
Handcut Collage | 28cm x 35cm
Photo: Jade Loring

"This was taken in Boone, North Carolina around 2014. It was quite a hike to get to an altitude where it almost seemed like we were looking down at the mountains, but it was so peaceful & inspiring. My favorite part about this photo is actually the color; it seems to be segmented in overlapping triangles at the bottom."

"This is the glacier at the top of Mt Kilimanjaro (5729meters). You climb to the crater rim in the dark and arrive at dawn which is like the dawn of creation as sunrise bursts over Africa and you can see to infinity, you are so high, and then there is this cliff of ice as you round the crater to the highest point and you just know that you are in another world much like the trek in Lord of the Rings. Magic has happened!."

Day 30: (Purple) Light to the Sky
Handcut Collage, 27cm x 25cm
Photo:
Malwina Chabocka

"The photograph was taken on a very cold January evening this year in Warsaw. Warmed up by a few shots of vodka with ginger and pepper, my boyfriend and I were walking around the city centre, filled with hundreds of people proudly displaying heart stickers on their coats, watching the firework display called Light to the Sky which takes place in front of the Palace of Culture and Science. It is part of the annual Grand Finale fundraiser of The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, the largest non-profit charity organization in Poland. The 237-metre-high Palace, one of the icons of our socialist past and a must-see for all tourists, has just as many devoted fans as passionate haters. On that evening, swept in the purple light, it looked quite beautiful and I felt compelled to act like a tourist myself, taking out my camera and snapping a picture.."
