(E)arthly delights, 2020

above » Earthly Delights (2020)
National Geographic magazines, pins, Styrofoam 'E', varnish
100 x 50 x 30 cm
For this project, Jornal Expresso challenged artists exhibiting at Mostra 2020 to create an intervention with a specially created Styrofoam 'E'. Nina applied the principles of collage using a three dimensional technique that she had previously explored in her workshops, allowing for quick and intuitive application onto foam substances.  Inspired by the classic Hieronymus Bosch painting The Garden of Earthly Delights, the work uses National Geographics from the 1970's onwards to reflect on the changing assumptions printed through the decades. Utilising the medium of the media as a literally substance to examine itself, (e)arthly delights explores aspects of pleasure and desire, and was completed just before the first lockdown. The growing awareness of the consequence of our (Western) lifestyles was becoming increasingly obvious, reflected to us through the media, but still unclear about how the pandemic would develop and affect us on a global scale.

The 1 metre high 3D collage sculpture won the challenge and is now part of the Jornal Expresso art collection in Portugal.

With kind thanks to
Ágnes László, who was had an internship with the artist at the time, for her assistance with the project.
